Safety Improvement and Signal Modification

District of Columbia Department of Transportation Traffic Safety Division Contract – Washington DC Retrieved crash records, developed crash summaries, and completed a traffic safety analysis for the 40 high crash intersections identified. Calculated crash rates based on the traffic volumes. Conducted field reviews at spot locations. Based on the detailed traffic analyses, crash patterns were grouped so that they could be further studied for the implementation of crash reduction countermeasures. Determined counter-measures and created a preliminary estimate of the cost for each improvement. Calculated a benefit/cost ratio based on the life expectancy of the improvement and used to rank the locations based on the greatest return for dollars spent and completed the District Department of Transportation’s first hazard elimination safety program.
